Too cold on April 1 for RE-71R? Empty Too cold on April 1 for RE-71R?

I have brand new RE-71Rs, and I've never driven this tire before so I'm not sure what to expect. Tire Rack says not to use or store near freezing temps. I can either run my winter tires (Pilot Alpin PA3) or the 71s on April 1 ("school"). Recommendations? Thanks!

As long as the temp is over 40 you won't have a problem with the R1R's. Winter tires could chunk on you and don't have much grip.

Okay, thanks. Looks like I'll wait until the last minute to put the RE-71Rs on my car (daily driver). We had a snow flurry in Chelmsford today!

I do keep my RE-71Rs in the basement until nighttime temps are consistently above freezing, FWIW.

My weather report for April 1st is 36 degrees and 60% precipitation when I hit the road in the morning for Ayer. Ugh... I'm hoping the forecast improves. Is it even safe to be on the highway with RE-71Rs in conditions like that? Could I damage my new tires before I even get them on the track?

If I'm too stressed about it I'll keep my winter tires on and have fun shredding them on the track!

I drove an auto-x once a few years ago with snow tires at a cold event. They were useless. They never stopped squealing I think even in a straight line! Snow tire are worthless at a-x.

Thanks for all the inputs, I appreciate the help. I need to weigh the risk of cracking my RE-71Rs by driving on them to Ayer on the sub-40 morning of April 1, against the certainty that my winter tires will stink on the track. April 1 is a "school", not competitive, so I assume no points will be awarded. If I'm gonna look like a fool on winter tires, that is probably the best day to do it!

I wish it would get warmer, that would be the best solution.

I actually ran a school a few years ago on winter tires (forgot to order new competition tires in time). Your times will not be particularly good, but who are you competing with at the school? I actually think the winter tires might have been helpful, because since they were *so* unforgiving, it forced me to work on making inputs more gradual and deliberate.

I'm still not going to do it again on purpose. Smile

FWIW, I did the school on PA2s a few years ago, and though slow, it was hilarious fun. Pilot Alpins are a little more pavement-oriented than other winter tires, and they held together fine.

Understand making a game-time decision on tires, but since this isn't a points event, it's reasonable to show up and practice car control on winter tires.... YMMV.

Of course, 15 minutes ago they posted a winter storm watch for Ayer, so you might have less of a dilemma on your hands come Sat AM....

I have a Subaru STI, so Autocross in the snow sounds like a blast to me!
